Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz is the richest Austrian in 2022 with a wealth of 24.9 billion euros. A total of 49 billionaires live in Austria, according to a current analysis of the ‘trend’. That is three more than last year.
Just like in 2021, the 100 richest Austrians together own about 200 billion euros. Fortune has stagnated due to the war in Ukraine, reports the “trend”. With 24.9 billion euros, Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz is still at the top. His increase in power can be explained by the constant growth of the company, but also by the high profitability of the beverage manufacturer.
Wealth of car deals
Also in the top three were the VW owner families Porsche and Piech with 41.6 billion euros (here the assets are divided among several people, please note) and Elisabeth Schaeffler with 6.4 billion euros. Schaeffler and her son Georg own shares in the two car suppliers Continental and Schaeffler. Supply chain problems and increased energy costs have recently reduced assets by around EUR 3 billion.
For example, other billionaires in Austria are the descendants of Billa founder Karl Wlaschek or Novomatic founder Johann Graf. There are a total of 49 billionaires in Austria, three more than in the previous year.
High inequality
400 super-rich own about a third of all financial wealth in the country. According to the “trend”, inequality is much more pronounced in Germany than in other countries. The Chamber of Labor and the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions therefore recognize that action must be taken. Specifically, the super-rich should pay more taxes. “Even if the government doesn’t want to introduce this tax right now, we won’t let that slow us down. We will continue to be a loud voice for higher taxes for the very wealthy,” Renate Anderl, president of the Chamber of Labor, said in a broadcast.
