“I had the dream of becoming a journalist and I worked hard to make it a reality”

Date:

The presenter is at the forefront of Antena 3’s desktop news program, the most watched of the day

He came to Antena 3 five summers ago to report on a decline in ‘Espejo Público’ and in August he is the face of the most watched news program on television, with quotas easily exceeding 20% of the ‘share’. Journalist Victoria Arnáu (Elda, Alicante, age 31) is a member of the network’s staff and was chosen to replace Sandra Golpe during her vacation. “I am aware that a lot more work is needed to stay where I am today. It’s very difficult to get there, but it’s more complicated to stay,” acknowledges the young communicator, who coordinates the network’s national news section for the rest of the year.

Which headline would you place in August?

It is without a doubt the month of the fires and everything that follows: unusually high temperatures and heat for this time of year, which also affect the drought we are dealing with. The swamps are decreasing in capacity and this also has consequences for the terrible fires that we are experiencing in Spain. It is what keeps us most busy and concerned.

Do you remember the first time you presented a newscast?

It had been two summers since the pandemic. I remember it had been a very special year, with all the incarceration and all the stress at work. The management team led by Santiago González, to whom I am very grateful, trusted me. They asked me if I dared to present a news program, the morning for a few days, because it was free, and I thought: if they challenge me to do it, it will be that I can do it. So I spent a few days in the summer, in an experience that I lived with tension because you are always nervous the first few times. When I finished, I felt comfortable and continued to take the opportunities presented to me.

Have you gotten used to the morning news?

It is a very special schedule with a lot of work behind it. I did it for a few days and it also didn’t give me time to adjust to the hours of sleep. I got up at 2am and went to the TV, so I had to go to bed at 6pm. I tried to sleep by lowering the blinds, in the middle of summer and in high heat. And a lot of coffee while reading the press, writing or making videos. Lots of caffeine in the body although the stress of work also keeps you awake.

Now, during the month of August, it presents the most watched news program on television.

The information is going very well. It is a privilege, but also a great responsibility to be at the forefront of the news that has the most audience on desktop. People are aware that no matter what August it is, today is not resting. Many things keep happening. Despite coming from a very information-intensive time, people still watch television on holiday and the bar has to be kept very high. I am lucky to have good references in this chain. I have learned a lot from Sandra Golpe and she is an example to follow. I try to cope with it.

Did Sandra Golpe give you any advice?

Sandra is a very spontaneous and close person with the team. Since I started at Antena 3, she has given me a lot of confidence from the beginning and has given me many opportunities. More than with advice, he has set an example for me. I like how it is conveyed to the viewer. He is a reference in ‘Antena 3 Noticias’.

What does your day look like when writing news?

People are sometimes surprised, but we get up very early to prepare the news. We are already in the newsroom around 8 am, we arrived with the radios being listened to and reviewed with the press. We see where the agenda of the day is going. Then we meet with the different news areas and they tell us about the topics that matter. Then we have to choose and make the overview, a fundamental moment to know what information will reach the viewer’s home that day. And we all get to work. The sections send their editors out into the streets, the news starts to prepare and in the morning new things keep popping up. You must be aware of the present. Finally she went to the hairdresser and make up, they make me beautiful, I disconnect a little and go to the set to present the news.

What informative moment will you remember in your professional career?

There are two moments that I will not forget. One was the pandemic, due to the idiosyncrasy of the coverage. Everyone was at home watching television, especially at a time when there was a lot of confusion and the need for verified information. The other was in Catalonia, during the ‘trials’. There were pro-independence mobilizations with serious incidents and it was coverage that I won’t forget either. We went there to join the Antena 3 team and I stayed for about two weeks, specifically in Girona. It is an experience I will not forget. That a journalist today has to wear a helmet and a press vest is something exceptional that I do not want to repeat.

Do you have a professional goal to achieve?

I was a teenager in her city who had a dream of becoming a journalist and I worked hard to make it a reality. I have come this far after many years of work. I am aware that a lot more work is needed to stay where I am today. It’s very hard to gain weight, but it’s harder to stay. I have no expectations, I enjoy every day of the work I do, whatever it is. I have always said that I am primarily a journalist who occasionally presents a news program. The great thing about this job is that you never know what to expect. All I want is to keep growing every day and to work honestly in journalism.
