MurCiencia: exploring the possibilities of scientific tourism in the region with the UMU

Date:

The university adds another linguistic and two routes through Cartagena and San Javier to its route through the historic center of the capital

The second edition of MurCiencia, the scientific tourism project promoted by the Unit for Scientific Culture and Innovation of the Office of the Vice-President for Transmission, Communication and Scientific Dissemination of the University of Murcia (UMU), is expanding its tours with three new routes through the region. The first is a language trail, pioneered at the national level, followed by a guided tour along the banks of the Marmenor of San Javier and a virtual route passing through Cartagena.

Using cultural emotions, tourism resources and the most advanced gamification techniques, this initiative challenges the public to live a different experience. To do this, UMU has chosen to highlight some of the most emblematic points highlighting a particular aspect of science, its history or its linguistic landscape.

This innovative proposal will allow you to live an experience different from the usual tourist routes in the center of Murcia. From a scientific-linguistic point of view, UMURLing reveals to those present the philological heritage of the city. The route, which consists of nine points, starts at the confluence of Paseo de Alfonso X with Plaza de Santo Domingo and passes through emblematic places such as the ‘four corners’ or the gate ‘Los Zagales’. This hidden linguistic landscape speaks to us, for example, of illustrious characters concerned about Castilian and Murcian; from other languages such as Latin, Arabic, Aragonese or Catalan, which today have given the Murcian vocabulary its specific personality and richness. And it shows how historical events have shaped our language and lexical heritage.

In short, the route reveals that the Murcian language and its vocabulary are linked to its history, gastronomy, culture, architecture, economy and of course to water and climate, the traces of which have permeated the urban development.

The rich cultural heritage of the Mar Menor is also the target of MurCiencia’s scientific gaze. Supported by the City Council of San Javier, the seven points of this route stop at the origin of the largest salt lake in the Mediterranean, the disciplines that have fostered the development of traditional fishing and related to its particular orography, its gastronomy, navigation, aviation, the salt mills or the sunken wrecks off the coast of La Manga. An original route, both on foot and by bike, with sights on both banks of the Mar Menor that can be covered in one day thanks to the ferry that connects these two banks.

MurCiencia has the cooperation of the Municipalities of Murcia and San Javier and the Spanish Foundation of Science and Technology (FECYT) -Ministry of Science and Innovation.

In addition to Cartagena’s great tourist offer, the UMU includes a virtual visit that explains its spectacular heritage, in this case from a scientific perspective. The route also consists of nine points and starts outside the Maritime Museum to walk through the city center until it ends at Plaza de España. The visit will allow you to learn about Roman science and engineering, the technology that contributed to the military past and present, the interesting life of Spain’s first graduate in chemical sciences and poet María Cegarra or what the deadliest animal in the world has to do with Cartagena.
