‘Ambulance’: groundbreaking action film?

Date:

The latest bet from Michael Bay, whose name is synonymous with outrageous action movie, arrives in theaters. His story is lost, buried by the abuse of frenetic editing and unbridled technique, in search of the big show

The premiere of the latest action craze, produced and directed by Michael Bay, arguably the only Western filmmaker currently trying to innovate the genre in the face of Eastern supremacy, provides an entertaining exercise in visual acuity that will amaze especially open-minded moviegoers. ‘Ambulance. Escape Plan’ is a remake of a 2005 Danish film, available on Netlix. Watching both films at once makes it possible to clearly perceive the differences between a modest project, already old, with a European label, and the reaction made years later in the US, multiplied by a budget. by a thousand, that is, thanks to the wand director of the ‘Transformers’ saga, whose best film to date is still ‘Pain and Money’, closely followed by ‘The Rock’ and ‘Armageddon’.

The hectic first twenty minutes of ‘6 en la sombra’, the previous entry by the well-known nervous camera director, premiered live in streaming, used different formats, used the current audiovisual language without prejudice with an adapted editing. Too bad that, after its brutal start, the show became a trailer for many movies in one, reigning in the zapping house brand while the main characters matter little to the viewer and lack uniqueness.

While Bay, in his own way personally, for a while flaunted the striking opening of ‘6 en la sombra’, one of the best done in the action genre in the West at the time, it must be insisted, the rest of the film fell to pieces without being able to overcome the rhythm of its ignition. In ‘Ambulance. Escape Plan’ aims to maintain this wild suspense for over two hours of footage that can be exhausting. The film departs from the same premise as the original film, stretching it to its limits in pursuit of the spectacle, utilizing every imaginable technological advancement in the moving image field.

A bank robbery breaks down and the protagonists are forced to hijack an ambulance in their makeshift escape plan. They do not go into the vehicle alone, making the great breakout chaos. Pursued by the security forces taking over the city of Los Angeles, the goal is to survive police harassment, resolve their grudges and keep casual passengers alive. Ultimately, they have to save themselves. This approach is the perfect excuse to not miss braking, explosions and acceleration, versus the profitable franchise ‘Fast & Furious’.

‘Ambulance. Escape Plan’ allows Bay to stage another of his rampant visual apocalypse, where the priority is not to let the audience breathe, over the story. It’s all about not blinking, it doesn’t matter if the scenes are better or worse and the acting team is at the service of the tour de force with little room to expand for the -numerous- cameras. The seal is unmistakable, to the point where we’re talking about author cinema. Serie B hipervitaminado, eager to devour the checkout. They also shine in the fireworks Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, (‘Candyman’), Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González (‘Baby Driver’). They stand firm in this apology for the old steroid-injected blockbuster.
