“The fourth season of ‘Stranger Things’ is the darkest and scariest”

Date:

“If the first ‘Stranger Things’ was ‘The Goonies’, this new part is ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street'”, assure the actors Charlie Heaton and Natalia Dyer, who presented the fiction in Madrid.

“I can’t even imagine how I’ll feel when we shoot the next season and I feel like this is over in every scene,” confesses Charlie Heaton (Leeds, age 28), the actor who brings Jonathan to life. in the successful ‘Stranger Things’. Set in the 1980s, the fiction is already in its fourth and penultimate season and is divided into two parts. The first, with seven episodes, will hit Netflix on May 27. The second, with the remaining two, will be uploaded to the platform on July 1.

That’s why the presentation of this new episode, which took place yesterday at the Rosewood Villa Magna hotel in Madrid, in which Heaton and Natalia Dyer (Nashville, 27 years old), the actress who plays Nancy, had a certain note of goodbye. Slightly shy, but charming, the two were busy unraveling the ins and outs of a series of episodes for which the Duffer brothers, creators of fiction, took their time. The pandemic had forced filming to be suspended in 2020 – the third season will be in 2019 – but the hiatus was far from frustrating for the team, but was seen as an opportunity to not only fine-tune the 800-page script, but also delivery to sign “more ambitious” from the series.

“It’s hard to talk about filming this season without addressing the pandemic,” Dyer said. “It’s slowed down, but it’s also a really big season, with a lot of storylines,” says the actress, praising the creators, “great writers, who always manage to get to incredible places.” “Everything is written,” adds Heaton, “and we go with them completely, but we have the freedom to change things during the performance because they know we know our characters through and through. Ultimately, it’s a very collaborative process .”

The fourth season of ‘Stranger Things’ kicks off six months after the Hawkins Mall battle. The Byers family, joined by Eleven, who has lost her powers, has left the city of Indiana, but a new supernatural threat seems to be emerging in the city. The group of friends, separated for the first time, has matured – and in some cases has gone through a growth spurt – “but without losing the essence,” says the actor. In Nancy’s case, the actress says the character has “found more of her own voice and learned to listen to her intuition, so the character’s arc has been a very pleasant journey when it comes to portraying her. I I think we have a fantastic female cast, with strong, well-defined women, and I’m lucky enough to be a part of that.” As for Jonathan, he has left Hawkins with his family. “I broke up with my girlfriend Nancy and I have a certain sense of rejection, but I have a new character, a friend who helps me through everything, gives me medicine, so to speak,” he explains with a laugh about the cannabis hobby that his wife now has. In this sense, he assures that the arrival of Eduardo Franco in the cast has led them to a lot of improvisation. “We made up some scenes and tried to make the whole crew laugh and we did, so it was a really good experience,” he says.

According to the actress, the fourth season is “the darkest and most terrifying of all”. Next to him, Heaton confirms it. “We’re getting closer to the end and this season is starting to prepare us and begin to explain everything that’s happened in Hawkins over the past few seasons. It’s by far the greatest season. We’ve all grown up, the fans, the characters and the series.” And he gives a very illuminating example: “If the first season was a great tribute to ‘The Goonies’ or ‘Count on Me’, this one can be seen more in ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street'”.

Not surprisingly, Robert Englund, who played Freddy Krueger in eight movies and a television series, is set to star in the new episode. “Working with him was great,” Dyer says. “He’s brought a super positive energy to the set and, without wanting to make a ‘spoiler’, there’s a moment where he has a very intelligent monologue and gives it his all. It was a masterclass,” says the actress, whose character is actually named after the main character of the Wes Craven film.

And while terror is the most amplified ingredient in this episode, fantasy, adventure and humor will continue to be part of the explosive mix. With so many genres, sometimes in sequences of just two or three minutes, how do you manage to modulate your interpretations? “Funny of you to say that,” Heaton replies. Only this season was the messiest shot. We filmed bits of different episodes, which was a big challenge and a bit confusing because I couldn’t remember where my character was.” Dyer continues: “You feel like you’re puzzling all the time.”

Of all the seasons they’ve filmed so far, keep both the first and the last. “When you shoot something for the first time, it’s special,” says the actor. Aware that it is misused on promotional tours to classify the newest as the best, Heaton assures that “people will be speechless when they see it. We get to the why of everything and that makes it even more interesting,” says this English actor who had a hard time learning to say “Nancy” in an American accent.

It’s possible to think that as the series garnered success, the pressure to offer a good product increases, but Heaton doesn’t see it that way. “I think I speak for everyone when I say that we feel like we’ve made a great family and that really helps to not feel that pressure so much and feel more like going back to what we did in the first season. It was fun, exciting and we always felt safe.
