The outgoing Tyrolean LHStv comes up with an ambitious plan. Ingrid Felipe (Greens) on the way. It wants to shut down 640 diesel buses step by step. Instead, it relies on an undisputed type of drive.
According to the state, traffic in Tyrol is responsible for about 50 percent of CO2 emissions. In the whole of the EU this is almost 30 percent. In Austria, CO2 emissions per capita in 2019 were about 50 percent above the EU average. “We urgently need action to reduce emissions. Public transport also plays a key role here,” explains climate protection and mobility LR LHStv. Ingrid Felipe of the Greens.
The EU has set the timetable for phasing out diesel engines from public transport (“decarbonisation”) in a directive. By the end of 2025, all public customers will have to convert 45 percent of their bus fleet to clean drives. The directive also includes gas-powered buses, while zero-emission buses only include those with electric motors, e-buses, trolley buses and hydrogen buses.
“In Tyrol, we have set ourselves the goal of meeting the requirements purely with electrically driven, i.e. ’emission-free’ vehicles,” explains Felipe. By 2027, 136 vehicles will be converted to zero-emission drives and by 2035 all 640 buses in Tyrol will be zero-emission. Additional costs including infrastructure until 2025: 23.2 million euros, of which 6.1 million euros are government shares.
