Urkullu highlights the “exemplary growth” of the Basque language and calls for consensus to face “new challenges”

Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu emphasized the “exemplary growth” of Basque over the past 40 years and has called for the courage to face the new challenges “also with consensus”.

Urkullu sat the act of the International Euskera Day which has been held at the Palacio Europa in Vitoria-Gasteiz, which has commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Euskera law and the consensus that made it possible, as reported by the executive.

40th anniversary of the Euskera Act

In this way, it has been recalled that the basic law for the normalization of the use of Euskera is 40 years old. The so-called Euskera law was passed in 1982 and Thus, tribute has been paid to those who took part in its preparation. In the Europa Palace it was possible to listen to the testimonies of former councilors Pedro Miguel Etxenike, Mari Karmen Garmendia and Miren Azkarate. The act was also attended by former parliamentarians Inmaculada Boneta, José Luis Lizundia and Jon Olaberria, among others.

In his speech, the ehendakari emphasized the “democratic courage of those who drafted, approved and processed the 40-year-old law”. “We also want to pay tribute to the people who paved the way for a prosperous future work in favor of the Basque language. They had the courage to become companions with different perspectives, sensibilities and inclinations,” he said.

It also assessed that “Basque society has reacted enthusiastically: The people of the Basque language offer, as a reminder to those who processed the Basque language law, the exemplary growth that the Basque language has experienced over the past forty years”. “Forty years on, that courage is still needed to also face the new challenges with consensus,” he said.

According to him, Euskaraldia makes it clear that “the courageous call for the use of Basque has the power to unite society if we manage to balance courage and prudence, if we manage to efficiency and unitywith the courage of those who processed the Euskera law”.

Bingen Zupiria

In turn, the Minister of Culture and Language Policy, Bingen Zupiria, pointed out that the path of the past 50 years has been very important for Basque and Basque speakers.

“I would say that the Basque community has taken our language to the highest degree it has ever had. But the path traveled shows us what needs to be done. We are faced with the opportunity to move forward and we have all that has been done for it, the institutional backing, the citizenry’s consent and the consensus that the agreements provide. Let’s move on!” he said.
