Almost only boys – Secretary of State Plakolm: ‘Asylum system is broken’

Date:

Almost 99 percent of asylum seekers under the age of 18 in Austria are male. For State Secretary Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP), this is a sign that the existing asylum system is broken.

In 2022, more than 90,000 asylum applications were submitted in Austria, 74 percent of which were submitted by men. This is evident from current figures from the Secretariat of State of Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP), based on the asylum statistics of October.

The situation is even clearer for young people under the age of 18: 98.8 percent of the more than 11,400 asylum applications are boys. “This figure alone shows how broken the asylum system is,” warns Secretary of State for Youth Plakolm. There is a huge imbalance here. Plakolm brings comparisons: “We have more asylum applications from boys under the age of 18 than we have primary school children in the whole of Burgenland or residents in Zell am See. That is no longer possible.”

Plakolm refers to the five-point plan of party friend and Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and the right of veto over the expansion of Schengen. “We must put an end to uncontrolled migration. Especially in the youth sector, it becomes clear how poorly the system works and what disastrous consequences it has.”
