With a speech to the nation, Nehammer wants to sharpen his chancellor profile

Date:

On March 10, ÖVP Chancellor Karl Nehammer wants to set out his vision for Austria 2030 for the leaders of the Republic. The speech is intended as part of the announced reconciliation process to fill the gaps created by the corona pandemic.

Ultimately, no one wants it to have been that way. Vienna City Councilor for Health Peter Hacker (SPÖ) is now cleaning up and regrets that the SPÖ would have supported compulsory vaccination against their conviction. Hacker describes the decision in the Ö1 “Journal zu Gast” as “not a highlight of the Corona politics”.

Given the different interpretations of how the serious decision to vaccinate came about, a reappraisal of the pandemic would be the order of the day, but hackers also broadly reject it. He doesn’t do much with ‘the chancellor chair circle’, as he calls the planned evaluation committee.

Invitations to the event have been sent
Chancellor Karl Nehammer will determine the start of the dialogue process on March 10. The invitations for the “Speech on the Future of the Nation – Austria 2030” are being sent out. As you can see on the invitation, Nehammer will not only look back on the Corona period and the events since the beginning of the war, he also wants to outline his vision of Austria. A speech that was actually expected from Nehammer last year.

But she never came. Neither at the ÖVP party congress at the end of April 2022, nor on any other occasion, such as the national holiday. Since Nehammer never stood up for an election campaign, many political observers were surprised that he did not define a profile as chancellor and did not announce ideas in which direction he wanted to lead the country.

Beyond the edge of the legislature
Nehammer now wants to close this gap. The invitation states that “just 80 days” after he was sworn in, war broke out in Ukraine. Crisis management had “priority”. Now, a year later, it is “important to give people in Austria perspective” and “to look beyond the legislature”. The speech will be a litmus test for Nehammer’s chancellorship of whether or not he has statesman status.
