Not exactly happy, but true to the line, the Greens announced on Thursday the decision to end the “Wiener Zeitung”. Green media spokeswoman Eva Blimlinger in particular stood out with an extremely questionable comparison to the Nazis – she has since rowed back.
The end of the oldest daily newspaper in the world sparked heated debates in the National Council – but one comparison in particular stood out. Blimlinger, who studied history, caused many misunderstandings.
‘Mauthausen was not yet liberated then’
She compared the restructuring of the “Wiener Zeitung” into a digital medium with the liberation of Vienna 78 years ago. At that time, “KPÖ, ÖVP, SPÖ and some independents met at the Vienna City Hall to sign the declaration of independence,” the media spokeswoman said.
“Mauthausen had not yet been liberated at that time, but Vienna had been liberated by the Red Army. And as this new beginning was, so it is today with a new beginning for the oldest daily newspaper in the world, I’m sorry. It’s a fresh start. It’s a step forward,” she says. The statement sparked a lack of understanding – numerous social media users said that not only were they unable to understand the content, but many also criticized the questionable choice of words in general.
Blimlinger meek: “It really failed”
Blimlinger herself was clear on Friday: “I want to apologize (…), that was really an absolutely failed comparison and a wrong analogy,” she claimed on Twitter. She was, of course, “aware of the incomparability of National Socialism,” she continued.
Maurer: “Do you think it’s fun for us?”
However, the Greens did not change their minds on this issue. “Do you think it’s fun for us to make these terrible decisions,” club boss Sigrid Maurer replied to the opposition – but then showed confidence that the switch to a digital medium “could work out well”. You have “great confidence in the independent editors”.
Media spokeswoman Eva Blimlinger admitted that she was originally “natural” for keeping the “Wiener Zeitung” in print. But there was no good solution for it, so you go the new way of transformation – “I’m sorry, but it’s a way to the future”.
