Excitement on the Internet – After criticism, now a lot of malice for Nehammer-Sager

Date:

After a video appeared on Twitter on Wednesday evening showing Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) in a jovial atmosphere, the Chancellor received a lot of criticism and malice for what he said on Thursday. Users express their anger, especially on social networks.

Chancellor Nehammer is exposed to discussions and hostility about X and Co. His six-minute video, recorded during an ÖVP visit to Hallein at the end of July, upset many people. In it, the Chancellor is angry about women who work part-time, even though they have no care responsibilities. He has no problem with someone working 30 or 20 hours, but “without subsidies from all of us who work hard.”

But even though it is said that there are children who do not get a hot meal, that irritates him: “Do you know what the cheapest hot meal is in Austria? It is not healthy, but it is cheap: a hamburger at McDonald’s,” Nehammer continued.

On Thursday, he finally addressed his followers on X and defended the content of the controversial recording. “I believe that achievements should be rewarding, and I believe that parents have a duty of care for their children.” And further: “Anyone who says that there are no hot meals for children in Austria is putting this country in a bad light.”

However, on social media, the original video is still fervently shared and commented on, and the content of what is said is often overloaded with malice, biting comments or even anger.

Ridiculous also from colleagues
Nehammer’s video statement is also not seen with much humor in political circles. SPÖ party leader Andreas Babler even called a press conference on Thursday to respond to the video. “In the video we see a chancellor who despises people because of something he is responsible for,” Babler said. Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler admitted that he had heard part of the video but had not yet seen it. “I’ll be annoyed after watching it, won’t I.”

Green Social Minister Johannes Rauch describes it as cynical to tell people in need that it is their own fault or that they should serve their children fast food. He also praises the relief measures taken by the government due to inflation. NEOS faction leader Christoph Wiederkehr made it clear in a video that it was not about a hot lunch, but about a healthy lunch.

FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl also sharply criticized Nehammer: “Every time Nehammer thinks he belongs to his colleagues, this mentality breaks out in him, which we know all too well from the ÖVP leadership team – keyword mob!” Clear words also came from Caritas President Michael Landau. “In Austria no one has to starve or freeze to death in winter (…) But anyone who says that in Austria no one starves or freezes has no idea of the reality of people,” he wrote on X.
