After an incident at a graduation ball in Liezen – a 17-year-old attacked a security guard – there is now criticism. Police arrived late as there were no officers available in the district capital. SPÖ mandate Michaela Grubesa now wants answers from the Minister of the Interior.
A large group of visitors observed this incident in mid-October and were shocked: As reported at the time, a young Syrian raced through a group of guests on his bicycle at a high school graduation ball in Liezen. A security guard stopped the hooligan in front of the Ennstalhalle, where about 1,500 people were celebrating. The 17-year-old then took out a knife and made cutting movements near the security guard’s stomach. Two colleagues came to the attacker’s aid, pushed the boy to the ground and called the police emergency number.
“Apparently two patrol cars had to be requested from Trieben and even Bad Mitterndorf because there were no officers available in the district capital itself,” the politician shakes her head. “And that at a large event with hundreds of people!”
“The man raged and raged for minutes”
“He complained and raged for minutes,” describes a Liezener. “Many of the young people who observed the scenes were astonished that the police arrived so late and arrested the man,” Michaela Grubesa, SPÖ MP from the Liezen district, told the “Krone”.
The 34-year-old also wants to question the further efforts of the executive in her region. Police recently called in the volunteer fire department to break into the apartment of a drug-related suspect. But that is actually not the main task of the Florianis: the comrades only open the apartment if there is “imminent danger”, according to fire brigade circles about this emergency requirement.
“The Minister of the Interior will have to answer for himself”
“It is reasonable to assume that the fire brigade always has to take over tasks from the police and that they are hopelessly understaffed,” Grubesa criticizes. This is especially the case in Upper Styria, especially in the Liezen district. “Our National Council club will investigate this and demand clarification. Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner will have to answer for this!”
