In a federal state comparison, Styria pays the least for privately housed displaced persons from the war zone in Ukraine. Why is that – and what is going to change.
Even three months after the start of the Russian invasion and the arrival of the first Ukrainian refugees in the country, the bureaucratic apparatus is still not running smoothly. An aspect that is criticized: not all states pay the same amount of support to displaced persons who are housed privately. Almost everywhere it is 215 euros per month and adult (100 euros for children) for meals. In Styria, on the other hand, it is only 200 or 90 euros.
Critics do not accept the argument
“The minor differences are due to the lower cost of living in Styria,” said SPÖ social adviser Doris Kampus’s office. An argument that critics accept only to a limited extent, because food prices in this country are just as high as in other states.
Parliament decision scheduled for summer
However, higher rates will soon apply throughout Austria: 245 euros for adults and 135 euros for children – with retroactive effect from 1 March. In the future, the replacement rent should also be 135 euros for individuals and 270 euros for a family. According to the social service of Styria, there is already a decision of all state refugee officers. However, the agreement has yet to be approved by all nine state parliaments and the National Council. In Styria, this decision should in any case be taken before the summer.
Aussee refugee helper Karin Marl reported to Ö1 about further bureaucratic hurdles and annoyances: Refugees would not know in advance when someone would come to the accommodation for a cash payment – if you are not there, there is no money. A family that has now moved to Vienna also has to return to Styria for one signature.
