Alarm bells are ringing in politics and the military. The reason is statements by former and possibly future American President Donald Trump, who questions NATO’s obligation to provide assistance. Armed forces leaders see an increased risk of war for Europe and warn that Austria must prepare for it.
One of them is Lieutenant General Bruno Günter Hofbauer. Trump’s statements should be taken seriously. The security situation is not improving. “Things can certainly happen that are unpleasant. I do not want to assume that Austria will eventually have to deal with a war. “Fortunately, I don’t see that happening at the moment, but we would do well to prepare for it,” says Hofbauer in the ‘Krone’ interview following two years of war in Ukraine.
