Spain, together with Norway and Ireland, will recognize the state of Palestine on May 28, as announced by the heads of government of the three countries.
“This recognition would be a good step, also applicable to other peoples who have their own reality in the world and to whom the same right applies.” These are the words of the acting Lehendakari, Inigo Urkullureferring to the announcement by Spain, Norway and Ireland to… Palestinian state.
Through a post on his official profile on a social network, Urkullu stated that “based on the right to self-determination of peoples and taking into account the reality of the Palestinian people, the decision to establish a Palestinian state, thus decided due to their citizenship and an internationally recognized authority, it would be a good decision.
He added that he United Nations criteria in that sense, and that “this has been a proposal for years, including before the start of the latest conflict between Hamas and the Israeli government.”

After learning of the announcement, Israel threatened “serious consequences” and summoned its ambassadors in Madrid, Oslo and Dublin for consultations. For their part, the Palestinian National Authority and Hamas have welcomed the measure.
