The Hungarian government wants to remain dependent on Russian energy imports. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó also underlined this during his visit to an energy forum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
According to him, Hungary will import about five million tons of oil from Russia this year through the “Druzhba” pipeline. Szijjártó also said he wanted to sign another agreement with Russian state-owned company Gazprom on gas supplies at the forum. Hungary’s energy security can only be guaranteed in cooperation with Russia.
Criticism of Ukraine for ending gas transit
The minister also criticized Ukraine because the country, which has been at war with Russia, does not want to renew the contract for the transit of Russian gas to Europe, which expires at the end of this year.
The Hungarian guest also boasted that it was thanks to his country that the EU did not introduce sanctions against the supply of gas and nuclear fuel from Russia. In fact, the government of right-wing populist Viktor Orbán continues to maintain good relations with Moscow, despite EU sanctions two and a half years after the start of the war.
