During their visit to Greenland, Donald Trump Jr. and his entourage reportedly pulled off a propaganda stunt. People were recruited to portray themselves as Trump supporters in videos with the promise of a free lunch at a fancy hotel.
This was reported by the Danish radio broadcaster DR. Several sources told the broadcaster that the videos surrounding the short trip of the son of US President-elect Donald Trump included several homeless and other socially disadvantaged people, often at the front. of a supermarket stay in the hotel.
Harsh criticism of Trump: “Extremely tasteless”
“These are homeless and elderly people who can suddenly eat in a restaurant they have never been to before,” a former resident of the capital Nuuk told the broadcaster.
To get there, all they had to do was put on a “Make America Great Again” hat and participate in Trump’s staff videos (see tweet below). “They are being bribed and it is extremely distasteful,” he said.
Videos from the newspaper ‘Ekstra Bladet’ also showed how people were approached on the street by Trump employees and given ‘Maga’ hats. It shows, among other things, an older woman wearing such a cap who didn’t even know the name of the person she was having dinner with – Trump Jr.. She just went with it, she said.
An outspoken Trump supporter who is Trump Jr. the Greenlandic capital Nuuk, DR denied that people had been ‘recruited’ for the supermarket. Instead, they stood in front of the hotel themselves and showed interest.
Trump escalates the rhetoric
Nevertheless, Trump continues to exploit his son’s journey in the media. In a post on his social network Truth Social, the 78-year-old thanked Greenlanders for treating his son and other representatives “so kindly.” He also posted a video of Greenlanders wearing “Maga” hats praising him, supporting the U.S. purchase of Greenland or agreeing to be part of America.
“We’ll see you again soon!” Trump wrote. It is unclear whether he is actually planning a trip to the island, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. On Thursday, he continued at a press conference in Florida: “As you can see in the videos, Greenlanders would very much like to become a state of the US.”
Denmark and NATO take Trump’s statements seriously
Donald Jr.’s trip to Greenland received a lot of attention because his father has repeatedly expressed his wish in the past for Greenland, which is part of the Danish kingdom. Trump recently did not rule out using military or economic coercion to gain control of the world’s largest island.
Several European NATO states responded to these statements with criticism and incomprehension. Austria also insisted that Greenland’s territorial integrity and sovereignty must be respected.
In Germany, Green candidate for chancellor Robert Habeck said Europe must “stand together.” “Europe must not allow itself to be divided on this point. If we now say that the Danes must do this alone, we will betray Denmark,” the German Vice Chancellor said in a Focus Online video podcast on Friday.
In Denmark, Trump’s statements are taken very seriously. The government of Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen informed the leaders of the parliamentary factions about the issue on Thursday evening. Afterward, Frederiksen told reporters that a meeting with Trump had been proposed, but she expected it wouldn’t happen until after the Republican was sworn in on Jan. 20.
