AMS boss Kopf: – Waiting time unemployment benefit “interesting”

Date:

The head of the Labor Market Service (AMS), Johannes Kopf, finds a waiting period for unemployment benefits “interesting and certainly worth discussing”. In the Ö1 series “Im Journal zu Gast” he argued, among other things, with the practice of seasonal workers, where workers are released at the beginning of the month and are re-engaged with the same employee three weeks later. Kopf does not understand why these costs are “attributed to the entire insurance community”.

About the labor shortage in tourism, Kopf said: “I don’t know if something automatically goes wrong when a market changes.” He also knows supply and demand. Many companies have now experienced that there are not as many people as they need with enormous growth. When asked whether tourism pays too poorly in the current situation, the head of the AMS answered in the affirmative.

The waiting period for unemployment benefits has been mentioned in recent days as a way to self-finance the planned increase in unemployment benefits. Kopf called the postponement of the reform regrettable. However, the decision is also understandable, the avoidance of poverty – especially from the point of view of the Greens – is currently “particularly virulent” due to inflation.

Reform postponed until autumn
The unemployment insurance reform is in any case experiencing some delay, the cabinet announced on Tuesday. The new rules can therefore no longer be presented before the summer, because the Russian attack on Ukraine and inflation are taking up too much capacity. Labor and Economy Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP) wants to “take a little more time” with the unemployment benefit reform, which has been postponed until the autumn, so that mistakes are not made, as he said on Friday.
