EU President -President Ursula von der Leyen, despite the change of the US under President Donald Trump, sees no problem buying weapons from the United States. Nevertheless, it argues for more European production.
In an interview with the weekly newspaper “Die Zeit”, the President of the EU committee answered “Yes” when asked if you could still buy our weapons that can be technically parked from Washington. “Nevertheless, I personally argue that we are producing more and more European,” she said.
Most weapons come from outside
At the moment it is the case that the lion’s share of the military material that Member States from outside Europe buy, the CDU politician said. But this also means that good jobs, research and development would be created there.
“I want to take place more in Europe in the future. These can also be American companies that develop and produce in Europe,” said Von der Leyen. It is crucial that the billions that the EU is now investing have also provided a positive effect for the European economy.
EU wants to upgrade with billions
The EU wants to upgrade strongly. Recently, the heads of state and the government had agreed various measures that the EU committee had previously proposed. This includes EU loans of 150 billion euros and an exception to Defense expenses for the EU debt rules. A total of 800 billion euros must be mobilized in the coming four years.
