The bodies are said to correspond to the civilian population from one or more pockets in the months following the military coup of July 1936. Paternáin was the scene of executions and clandestine burials between the summer of 1936 and the early months of 1937.

Minister Ana Ollo paid a visit this morning to the work of the Navarro Institute of Memory for the exhumation in Paternáin of the bodies of ten people found in three graves of the Pamplona prison.

As reported by the government of Navarre in a note, the bodies could correspond to the civilian population from one or more pockets of the Provincial Prison of Pamplona in the months following the July 1936 military coup.

Paternáin, as well as other cities in the Cendea of ​​Zizuro or the neighborhood Olzawas the scene of clandestine executions and burials between the summer of 1936 and the early months of 1937, and prospecting work beginning on the 20th resulted in the discovery of these three graves.

The first information for the location came through the Association of Relatives of Shots of Navarra in 2017, who collected the testimony of a local who recalled how his mother told him that “there, in the field, they killed a group of 10 or 12 people” and “they buried them there and for many years you could see the sunken area. When they started working with machines, it became equal”.

The surveys you did that year gave negative results, but subsequent surveys, promoted in particular by members of the Paternáin Council, found that the road layout had changed from the road that existed in 1936 and that the cemetery to the contrary of what was thought, as it turned out.

To determine the identity of these people, DNA analysis will be performed on the remains found and on their relatives, which will be compared in the NASERTIC laboratory.

This action is part of the excavation plan that the Directorate General for Peace, Coexistence and Human Rights, whose head has also gone to Paternáin today, is implementing through an annual agreement with the Aranzadi Science Society.

To date, 13 actions have been carried out, three of which have given a positive result with the location of at least 35 bodies: one in Ansoáin, 23 in Berriozar and at least 10 in Paternáin.
