European football’s highest body is investigating the club chaired by Joan Laporta for the 2020-21 season bills

Ten European football clubs, including Barça, are under investigation by UEFA for failing to comply with the rules of financial ‘fair play’ in the 2020-21 season, according to ‘The Times’, which expects the body that heads the Slovenian Aleksander Ceferin could soon announce sanctions. In addition, another ten entities remain under UEFA’s scrutiny due to their accounts in the latest campaign, although the latter’s situation is less delicate as they can still review them to regularize them.

While the British newspaper indicates that the fines would be of an economic nature for some of the entities that UEFA has placed under its supervision, as is the case with PSG or Olympique de Marseille, other entities such as Inter Milan, Roma, Juventus or Barça would be subject to penalties of a sporting nature that could even lead to a ban on participation in certain competitions.

The rules governing UEFA’s financial control only allow losses of €30 million over three years, but provide for exceptions related to losses related to the coronavirus pandemic, the main impact of which on the clubs’ economy is precisely took place in the 2020-21 academic year by paralyzing the tournaments for months and emptying the stands of the stadiums when the ball rolled again.

These rules will change from 2023, when a new system comes into effect whereby clubs may spend only a percentage of their income on player salaries, transfers and agent commissions in a calendar year. For example, the limit will be 90% in 2023, 80% in 2024 and 70% from 2025.

However, UEFA has cracked down on a series of clubs that did not follow the rules in force, including raising the blame against Barça or Juventus, two entities that, along with Real Madrid, have been plunged into a legal battle with the governing body of the European Union. football due to the failed Super League project.
