the Belgian Remco Evenepoel fulfilled his dream of completing a “unrepeatable time”winning the world champion rainbow jersey in Wollongong (Australia), a title the 22-year-old dreamed of after winning the Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Back to Spain.
“This is something I dreamed about. After a monument, a great classic, a grand tour and a world championshipI believe that I won everything I could win this year. I don’t think I’ll ever have another season like this. We will have to organize a big party tonight, I guess I will not see my bed”, said the world champion.
Evenepoel, who became the first Belgian world champion since 2012 when Philippe Gilbert won, received congratulations from all his teammates, including fourth-placed Wout Van Aert, whose first he shared the national team stripes.
“I think we really rode as a team. Like I said, we wanted to become world champions as a team, no matter what,” said Evenepoel.
The winner of the Tour of Spain is clear that the opportunity to win the rainbow jersey in Wollongong is unique, and Belgium must take advantage of it.
“It’s Wout Van Aert’s chance or mine. I had to attack from a distance so that he would follow me and we would leave together. I think we deserve it. We really deserve it.”
