Alonso and Alpine no longer support each other

Date:

The Asturian’s umpteenth mechanical problem forced him to leave Singapore and made it clear that neither he nor the team are comfortable with the situation until they split up for good.

Every divorce has its period of fights. Except on rare occasions, divorce in a marriage usually has times when the spouses throw things at each other and blame the mistakes that eventually led to the breaking of what seemed like a happy story. This applies to love affairs as well as to work: isn’t there a grudge between an employee who has been fired (or decides to leave) and his company?

In a competitive world like that of professional sports, even more so. From the moment the break of two parts is announced until it becomes effective, usually a complicated time passes where the tension in the environment is cut with a knife. Especially if one of the parties insists that this separation will not be amicable. Under this premise, Fernando Alonso’s reaction after he set off again due to a mechanical problem in the Alpine A522 is completely understandable.

Until now, as part of the game’s circumstances, Alonso had accepted the fact that he was leaving due to a breakdown. His unlucky years at McLaren Honda gave him a hardening of the skin that made him bulletproof in this situation, but little by little he softened until he felt that fate was very unfair to him. In addition to personal sensations, the Asturian pilot formulates it numerically. According to him, there are about 60 points that he has not added because of Alpine, due to the disastrous reliability and decisions that weigh him and the team itself in their battle for a chocolate medal in the world championship.

With the one in Singapore, Alonso has failed to score points in six Grand Prix. The reality is that, except for some minor details, the poor results are due to Alpine. Stage opportunities are missed, also due to poor decisions or a reliability inherent in the team until it gets a ‘B-team’ or client. Renault will not be able to develop its power source under circumstances with one team, which also has the result. Honda and Mercedes, on the other hand, have multiple labs. That is a disadvantage that Alonso will not have in Aston Martin, motorized by the Germans even if it is not with a ‘black leg’ product.

But beyond what the numbers say, the feeling that there is no turning back in the relationship between Alonso and Alpine can be summed up in one word: “Unacceptable”. It couldn’t be more powerful, and that bit his tongue, when it comes to summarizing what he’s experiencing.

Alonso will try to help Alpine to fourth in the Constructors’ World Championship, but that won’t be his primary goal. In fact, if he succeeds, it will almost be a secondary and to some degree unwanted consequence, as his challenge in the next five remaining dates is to defeat Esteban Ocon.

The French driver already had a reputation for being somewhat overbearing in his statements. By comparing himself to Lewis Hamilton himself as the only driver who could have beaten Alonso before he reached it, and also in a wrong way (Jenson Button, who did it in 2015, was already responsible for removing the colours), earned him numerous critics. Especially since he hasn’t done it yet.

There is no denying that Ocon is not Vandoorne and that the Frenchman is a much stronger rival than other teammates Alonso has had in the past. His fame of destroying those driving the other team car is well deserved, as the data is what it is: only Trulli, Hamilton (who tied for points but surpassed him for more podiums), Button and for now Ocon are able been with him.

Lacking five races, one of which is in sprint format (more likely to score), Ocon has only 7 points more than Alonso. For example, now that the Spaniards are in sixth place and the French are not scoring, there is ‘sorpasso’ for the first time this season. In Alpine it is clear that when in doubt they take advantage of the pilot who will stay with them in 2023 and in whom they have all their hopes, something that Alonso assumes and even likes. Because there is nothing more fun in a divorce than when it comes to dividing the things, you can take the car, crockery and television that they like so much and that they took for granted, from the other party.
