Nadia Nadim: “Qatar 2022 will show the Arab world’s passion for football”

Born in Afghanistan, Nadim was forced to leave his country in 2000, at the age of 12, after his father was murdered. After a difficult journey, he and his family settled in Denmark as refugees. It was there that his talent as a footballer was discovered, leading him to go on to become the first nationalized player to represent the Scandinavian country. Nadim also enjoyed a stellar club career in Europe and North America, playing for City of Manchester and the Paris Saint Germain. Off the pitch, Nadim is a motivational speaker, an ambassador for UNESCO and recently completed his doctorate in medicine.

“I play football because I love it. The passion and the love for the game are my favorite parts of football,” said Nadim, who reached a century of appearances with Denmark this summer before playing for his adopted country in England Women’s Euro Cup 2022. “It has given me a life, to be honest. I think it has taught me everything I know about life, about myself. It has broadened my horizons and made me the person I am today.”

During Qatar 2022, Nadim will monitor Denmark’s World Cup campaign, as the Danes are included in Group D.
