The coach of Liverpool, Jurgen Kloppsuggested that Cody Gakpo could be his only major signing in the January window, saying the club “cannot play Monopoly” in the transfer market and that he has “faith and confidence” in the players in his disposal.
With forwards Luis Díaz and Diogo Jota sidelined through injury, Liverpool signed Gakpo (he scored three goals for the Netherlands at the World Cup), from PSV Eindhoven for a reported initial fee of €45 million.
“I don’t want to disappoint anybody, but we signed a standout player in Cody Gakpo and the next thing you read is, ‘Who’s next?'” Aleman said.
“We can’t play Monopoly. We never will. … It’s a big part of my philosophy to work with faith and trust in the players we have and not keep second-guessing them by saying we have to of another player in their position.”
After a poor start to the season, Liverpool are 15 points behind leaders Arsenal but have won their last four league games to move up to sixth ahead of Monday’s trip to Brentford.
