Wehrlein started the Diriyah E-Prix with a double win and lead

The German Pascal Wehrlein, a Porsche driver, ended his participation in the Diriyah E-Prix in Saudi Arabia with a double victory in the two races of the weekend and is positioned as the new leader of the Formula E World Championship.

The German prevailed again, this time by 1″252, against his British rival Jake Dennis, a Porsche-powered Avalanche Andretti driver who had made more overtakes than anyone else, in a race where the Friday’s first two places were repeated at the Diriyah street circuit.

René Rast was third, edging out Jaguar’s Sam Bird in the closing stages of the race, putting newcomer NEOM McLaren on the podium for the first time.

British rookie Jake Hughes earlier took McLaren’s first pole position, in just his third race with the team that won last year’s title under Mercedes ownership, but finished fifth after running out of power eventually.

“The pace of our race was incredible, today we again had a perfect strategy,” said Wehrlein, who started fifth on the grid and became the fifth Formula E driver to win both races in one weekend and was named Driver of the Race. The former Formula 1 driver finished second to Dennis at the World Cup opener in Mexico City. The fastest lap and the bonus point for Sam Bird.

Wehrlein now has 68 points in the standings, to Dennis’ 62, while Envision Racing’s Sébastien Buemi is third with 31.

The fourth round of the championship will be in Hyderabad (India) on February 11.
