This is Mourinho’s soldier who will continue in Roma next season

Nemanja Matic became part of the ‘Special Five’, the club of players who have lasted the longest Jose Mourinho. The Serbian midfielder joins the names of Ricardo Carvalho, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Paulo Ferreira who, at least, played 197 meetings under the command of ‘Mou’. And there will be a little more, because Matic is one of the untouchables in the midfield of Rome (26 league games as a starter) and, according to ‘La Gazzetta dello Sport’, he will sign his renewal for one more season until 2024.

In recent days, the giant Matic (1.94m) visited his home country to return to the stadium of Jedinstvo, club where he made his debut and played his first national championship. It was in the 2002-03 season, at the age of 16, when the Serbian was a little prodigy of precocity. Now, with 34 years behind him, the Serbian has become a rare example of competitive longevity after accompanying Mou on his stages in Chelsea (2013-15), Manchester Utd (2016-18) and Rome (2021-present).

A few weeks ago, the conditions to access the second year of the contract in Rome were put in place for the same term in the fixed part – some 3.6 million– more bonuses (about 600,000 euros) which will vary by trophies and the european league. In addition, Italian sources point out that in Rome he was very prosperous, so he bought a house where he lived with his family.

He is becoming more and more a leader in the locker room, and he shows it not only because of the feeling he creates with champions like Dybala and Wijnaldum, but also for his duty to young people entering important football. A clear example is that of Volpato, who often recalls how he helped Matic’s tips grow. It is therefore expected that the ‘giallorossi’ will announce a renewal within a few days.
