The Americans Jessica Pegulaseed number 3, and Coco Gauffnumber 5, qualified this Tuesday for second round of the WTA grass court tournament in Eastbourne (United Kingdom) with a two-set victory.
Gauff she defeated her compatriot Bernarda Pera (27) 6-3, 6-2 in 61 minutes to reach the second round in Eastbourne for the second time in her two appearances, while her regular doubles partner, peguladefeated Chinese Zheng Qinwen (24) 6-3, 6-4 in the first meeting between the two.
With this victory, Gauff maintained his perfect record in first round matches this season. The last time the 19-year-old lost her opening match at a tournament was in the group stage of the WTA Finals last year.
Pegula, world number 4, beat Zheng, last season’s best WTA newcomer, after an hour and 38 minutes of intense play.
The win was Pegula’s twenty-eighth of the season. She is the fourth player on the circuit to win the most games this year, behind only Iga Swiatek (36), Aryna Sabalenka (35) and Elena Rybakina (31).
Gauff and Pegula could meet in the quarterfinals if they both win their second-round matches on Wednesday. The first against British Jodie Burrage and the second, against Colombian Camila Osorio.
