This is the sprint race format of the Austrian GP:

In this new format, as happened in Baku, there will be 2 qualifiers: one on Friday and one for Saturday. The difference is that Friday’s qualifying will order the starting grid for Sunday’s race, while Saturday’s qualifying will be in a shorter format and will only be valid for ordering the grid for Saturday’s sprint race.

  • Friday: Free Practice 1 and qualifying. The qualy will be Q1, Q2 and Q3 and will dictate the starting positions for Sunday’s race.
  • Saturday: Classification ‘shoot-out’ and sprint race on Saturday. Saturday will be an independent day, because whatever happens, the starting order of Sunday’s race will not change in relation to the positions obtained in the ‘qualy’ on Friday. The ‘shoot-out’ classification will be shorter, as well as Q1, Q2 and Q3, and will only serve to establish the starting order for Saturday’s sprint race. This time, a change will be applied to this ‘qualification’: the obligation to compete on a new tire in Q3 was removed after Lando Norris was unable to leave Baku in Q3 because he no longer had a set of new tyres. Saturday’s sprint race will award 8 points to 1st, 7 to 2nd and so on to 8th, which will earn 1 point. And on the same Saturday the sprint race will be held, about 100 km and about 30 minutes long.
  • Sunday: 71-lap race. The grid is determined by ‘qualy’ on Friday. The points of a normal race are distributed (25 for the winner, 18 for the 2nd, 15 for the 3rd… and 1 point for the fastest lap author if he is in the Top-10 ).
