The Basque Federation does not deny its official status

Date:

The Basque Football Federation is still determined to achieve the official status of Euskal Selekzioa. It was adopted today by its president, Javier Landeta, in an appearance in the Parliament of Gasteiz at the request of EH Bildu. Relevant steps will continue to be taken from this sports entity.

“We do not give the goal of achieving the official status of Euskal Selekzioa, but always with respect to the current law,” said Landeta, who also did not close the door to enter UEFA and FIFA. In a question from Rebeka Ubera, representative of the said political party, the president of Vasca explained why the denial that last year was given by the two organizations on entering the Basque Country as for steps to be taken in the future.

The legal services of the Federation, as explained, have determined that in view of the laws of both entities there is no possibility of success if the TAS is used because, among other requirements, to become a member it is necessary to be national association of a country recognized by most UN states. The existing legal precedents are invalid because they were adopted in accordance with previous regulations, which were amended at the request of the Spanish Federation to prevent the Basque Country and Catalonia from entering UEFA and FIFA. Landeta understands that in this case “there are political adjustment factors that do not occur with other possible revenues brought to the TAS.”

This decision not to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, in any case, does not imply for the Basque Federation that “the process is still not open or that this Board is abandoning the purpose of the official status of Euskal Selekzioa who always has respect for legality current “.

Landeta explained, in this sense, that FIFA allows a new entry request to be submitted within a year and its laws consider entering regional federations if they have the consent of the state entity. In 2019, the Basque Federation had already explored this possibility, but Spanish president Luis Rubiales told them that “no negotiations will begin on this matter.”

La Vasca considers, however, that “the door to reaching a possible future agreement is not closed” and points in this sense that the 2019 agreement between PSOE and PNV for Pedro Sánchez’s investiture includes “the commitment to open channels to promote the international representation of the Basque Country in sport and culture”.
