A 17-year-old Italian cyclist died during the first stage of the Junior Tour of Upper Austriaafter an accident on the descent of a mountainous section, organizers reported on Saturday.
The accident in the Mistelbacher Berg took place on Friday and the cyclist was taken by helicopter to a hospital in the city of Linz, but died on Friday evening from serious injuries caused by the fall, as reported today.
“It is with tears in our eyes and a broken heart that we announce that our junior Jacopo Venzo has left us. The boy was the victim of a very serious fall yesterday during the descent of the first stage of the Tour of Upper Austria,” reported his team, Campana Imballaggi Geo&Tex Trentino.
“Jacopo is an extraordinary young man, who has a future in sport and above all in life, and for this it hurts us more,” his team added, asking that the family’s privacy be respected.
“Now we have another angel who will protect us up there. Goodbye Jacopo, thank you for the happy times we spent together. You can’t imagine how much we will miss you”, concluded the companions.
Organizers canceled the cycling round that was attended by 140 youth from various European and American countries.
“Our thoughts are with the family, coaches and teammates.. Despite having a perfectly established system of assistance and all medical efforts, the cyclist did not survive his serious injuries,” said the organizers.
The 17-year-old was descending alone at the time of the accident and fell on a curve. Many teams receive help from psychologists to deal with the situation.
