The Madrid High Performance Center will pay permanent tribute to Carme Valero, who from this Thursday named the athletics facilities of this sports complex, owned by the Higher Sports Council.
In an emotional event held in the indoor athletics module, the Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, Pilar Alegría, explained the reason for this recognition of the best Spanish athlete of the 20th century. “Carmen Valero is a true reference and a pioneer woman,” said Pilar Alegría.
“It’s a real honor that these tracks are named after him. Many athletes will feel the inspiration that Carmen Valero was and is today,” said Pilar Alegría in the event held this afternoon. “We feel honored to recognize his figure as he deserves. Thanks to the family for allowing us to share their legacy,” he said.
For the minister, “Carmen Valero achieved his goals. Along with other women like Sagrario Aguado, she is an example for many other generations of athletes who now represent the success of a country that is increasingly dedicated to women’s sports. From this Government we will always work in defense of equality and inclusion in sport. We will continue to work hard to break all the gaps,” assures Pilar Alegría.
Having died in January at the age of 68, Carme Valero left behind a legacy full of sporting merits. He was the first Spanish Olympic athlete and remains the only double world champion in the history of Spanish athletics, thanks to the cross country titles achieved in 1976 and 1977.
