Kroos continues to extend his countdown: “Not yet”

Date:

Toni Kroos continued to extend the countdown to his retirement after Germany’s victory over Denmark in the round of 16 of the European Championship. Nagelsmann’s team suffered badly in Dortmund but now await the winner of the match between Spain and Georgia in the quarterfinals, which will be played on Friday in Stuttgart.

This Sunday, June 30, the midfielder officially ended his relationship with Real Madrid, the team he said goodbye to in the Champions League final that won at Wembley against Borussia Dortmund. Kroos, 34, announced at the end of May his decision to hang up his boots after the Euro Cup and at the moment his team is still alive.

“Not yet,” wrote the Mannschaft footballer on his Instagram account, knowing that every game he plays could be the last of his successful career. The host’s goal is to reach the final on July 14 at the Berlin Olympic Stadium.

Yesterday Kroos played 90 minutes for the first time in this Euro Cup in a difficult match against Denmark that was marked by a 21-minute rest due to an electrical storm in the first half. The game was on the line and Nagelsmann chose to hold back his midfielder and preferred to take Gündogan or Andrich off the field first.

The hypothetical confrontation with Spain in the quarterfinals is full of morbidity and refers to what happened at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, when La Roja and France met in the round of 16 in what may have been Zinedine Zidane’s last game as a professional. On the day of the crossing, the newspaper Marca published a cover story that was in the Spanish newspaper: “We are going to retire Zidane.” In the end, in Hannover, the French team won with authority 1-3 with Zizou closing the match with a great goal.
