The women’s group Tigers beat this Thursday 4-0 at Monterey in Champions Cup W of Concacaf. Tigres moved up to second place in group A, ahead of Costa Rican team Alajuelense, who defeated Frazsiers 5-0 on Tuesday. The Champions Cup brings together 10 of the top women’s teams from North, Central America and the Caribbean.
The students of Spanish coach Milagros Martínez won at their stadium with scores from Maricarmen Reyes, Jenny Hermoso, South African Thembi Kgatlana and Cristina Ferral. Facing a disconnected opponent, with poor flank coverage defended by Samantha Simental, Tigres pressed from the start.
Monterrey, which included Costa Rican Amelia Valverde, fought back until the 23rd minute when Maricarmen Reyes made it 1-0 with a pass from Jacqueline Ovalle. The locals looked for more and in the 32nd minute they widened the difference with a header from Jenni Hermoso, who received a service from Ovalle, who had a big sacrifice in the match. Simental lost the ball in injury time. Sthepany Mayor laid the ball to Kgatlana, who increased the lead with his right foot.
Monterrey improved a bit in the second half, but Tigres didn’t respect the league champions, appearing on the wings and creating danger until Ferral scored the fourth goal in the 70th minute. In the 93rd minute, Rebeca Bernal from outside ended the clearest scoring play for Valverde’s team.
The other team in group A is Gotham NJ/NY of the National Women’s Soccer League, who will debut on September 5 with Alajuelense. Monterrey will host Frazsiers on the same day, while Tigres will visit Frazsiers on the 18th.
