Alpine leaves Alonso again, who reconsiders his continuity

Date:

In any case, the Spaniard’s poor result in the Canadian GP cannot be attributed to the driver as poor strategic management and poor reliability are behind

The format of car competitions like Formula 1 has a certain amount of ferocity. On a Saturday you can enjoy the fleeting win that is a good result in the standings, which is absolutely useless if the next day is not finished in the race. This is the case with what happened to Fernando Alonso.

Without neglecting that the conditions were in his favour, Alonso had a very bitter weekend at the end. After a happy Friday and a memorable Saturday, concluded with a second starting position that left him and the experienced and new Spanish fans thinking ‘what if’, the hard reality came on Sunday. No luck, no reliability, not even decent strategic management from the wall. How will Alpine’s crappy approach to the Canadian race be that even Ferrari did better and it’s at this point where they usually fail.

Of the three factors that failed, happiness is the least important in terms of importance. Alonso pointed out after the race with a remarkably disappointed gesture that the virtual safety cars had not been good for him and that he was therefore unable to enter the pits at the optimum time. To a certain extent, he is not wrong. Carlos Sainz also failed to pit in the first and in fact Alonso took advantage of following his wheel and the Ferrari turned him into a hare in those phases of the race.

What is explained much worse is why Alpine didn’t move when they saw the pilot’s times that should give them the best possible result fall into the water. From relatively comfortable behind the red car, he started to lose about half a second per lap (not eight tenths or a second as he later said) from lap twenty, something that eventually saw him fall off the podium and after the ‘top 5’, what was the minimum goal. Like those political parties that only strive not to lose more seats in an election and eventually disappear from parliament, Alonso went from dreams of a champagne bath to a shower of cold reality.

The fact that Alpine was unable to respond does not minimize the major reliability issue Alonso faced. As he later complained, the mechanical problems only overtook his car. All went well for Esteban Ocon, and he was even able to (as far as he could) help Alonso defend himself from his pursuers.

The driver wanted to focus his criticism of the team on the reliability aspect. “Another reliability issue only in car 14. It’s disappointing. I’m trying to be better than the sixth and seventh here. If we don’t finish on the podium or fourth, it’s because we had another reliability issue with the car. Maybe bad luck with virtual pacecars, but happiness cannot be controlled. The reliability in car 14 should be a little better,” Alonso raised his voice.

Alpine falls asleep and there are already many that Alonso has had to endure. As with that couple of boyfriends who work irregular shifts and one waits for the other late at night, it’s okay if it happens once or twice, unless they fall asleep on the couch every day. The intent of both is to keep going, but if neither tries to keep the flame alive, as it has been so far, it may eventually wear out until it breaks. Right now they both want to stay together and that’s how it will be except for a last minute change.

With Oscar Piastri already signed to Williams, there is no reason for Alpine not to renew Alonso for 2023. However, the lack of results could be a serious problem: the pilot has given himself this summer as a period of reflection. Because while the team has Alonso as a more than solid option, the most logical, it may be the pilot who prefers to make some phone calls or start answering those who have already questioned him about what he will do in 2023.
