As the differences between the two circuits dissolve, competition at Shadow Creek Golf Club could be the prelude to a Ryder Cup-style match between the two circuits held for a whole weekend.
McIlroy’s start helped the PGA Tour team earn points in the best-ball competition. McIlroy opened with the birdies in putts of medium distance to win the first two holes. He then secured the opening session point with a 50-foot putt, while DeChambeau missed a putt short to tie.
In alternating stroke competition on six intermediate holes, a putt DeChambeau’s miss gave McIlroy and Scheffler the ninth holeand a putt McIlroy’s 4-footer on the 12th hole closed the session with a 2-0 lead. The LIV Golf team did not win a hole until #11.
Although DeChambeau had trouble with putter throughout the day, several missed shots on the 16th hole, for both DeChambeau and Koepka, spelled the end. Scheffler, world number 1, sealed the match with a birdie on the 16thwhile Koepka missed the one putt for birdie and the singles match was tied.
McIlroy and Scheffler shared $10 million for the victory, which was paid in cryptocurrency.
