Flavio Cobolli defeated Dominik Stricker 6-3 and 7-6(2) and led the transalpine team that sealed the victory with Jasmine Paolini’s win over Belinda Bencic 6-1 and 6-1. In addition, Italy made it 3-0 by winning the mixed doubles as well. Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori beat Belinda Bencic and Dominic Stricker 6-4, 6-4.
The launch of Group B, also based in Sydney, gave the victory of the Czech Republic against Norway (1-2). The Czech team overcame its rival’s first advantage led by Casper Rudd.
Ruud needed three sets to oust Tomas Macchac 7-6(6), 5-7 and 6-4. But Karolina Muchova leveled the series with her resounding victory over Malena Helgo 6-2, 6-2. The head-to-head in mixed doubles was resolved. Karolina Muchova and Tomas Machac defeated Ulrikke Eikeri and Viktor Durasovic, 6-4, 6-4.
Norway will have a new chance in its second match, on Monday against Poland, which has yet to debut.
