The president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, met with the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, in Mar-a-Lago (Florida), two days before his inauguration, to discuss the organization of this year’s Club World Cup and the 2026 World Cup to be held in the North American country.
Infantino shared a photo on Instagram on Friday with Trump, decked out to play golf, two days before he begins his second term as president, on Jan. 20 after the inauguration ceremony in Washington.
“We are talking about the Club World Cup this summer and the 2026 World Cup, two truly global tournaments in which the United States will play an important role as host,” Infantino said.
The president of FIFA thanked Trump for his support in the coming months and the time devoted to the discussion of these two great tournaments, new attempts to popularize soccer in the United States, a country where it has not yet established itself as the mass phenomenon it is in other parts of the world.
The Club World Cup starts on June 14 with the opening match in Miami, the Egyptian Al Ahly-Inter Miami, and 32 major clubs from all continents will participate in the tournament. In total, 63 games will be played, culminating in the final on July 13 in New Jersey.
The 2026 World Cup will also feature the participation of the United States, although the organization of the tournament, the most important in world football, will also be shared between Mexico and Canada.
