Evenepoel, the strongest in Donosti after only 45 km

Date:

the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Quick Step) gyear this Saturday Classic San Sebastian after a single journey of about 45 kilometers. Evenepoel, 22, won the Basque race for the second time, three years after his first victory.

Frenchman Pavel Sivakov took second place, nearly two minutes behind, ahead of Belgian Tiesj Benoot, more than two and a half minutes away.

Evenepoel, who won Liège-Bastogne-Liège in April, has not raced since winning his country’s time trial title on June 23.

The young Belgian rider completed a three-week training camp in northern Italy to prepare for the Vuelta, his main goal for the second half of the season.

In the Basque Country, Tour de France riders are tired after three weeks of racing. Among them, the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, who distanced himself from the Jaizkibel climb with 63 kilometers to go, and the French David Gaudu.

Evenepoel provoked battles in Erlaitz, the main difficulty of the route (4 km at more than 10%). Britain’s Simon Yates held onto his wheel at the start, but was overtaken by early pursuers and eventually finished sixth.
