For example, you must use the fog lights to avoid a fine from the DGT

The use of lights is mandatory when visibility is poor, but doing so when inappropriate may be grounds for a sanction

Meteorological phenomena, such as rain, snow or fog, make driving difficult and if they occur, extreme precautions must be taken to avoid an accident. The vehicle itself has security elements to reduce risk on the road. The wipers help to see and the lights also help other drivers see you when visibility is limited. But as for lighting, you need to know when and how to use it to avoid a fine from the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).

Fog is one of the situations on the road that most hinders proper visibility. The risk of an accident increases and even more so at night, which is why you need to turn on the fog lights. But you have to be careful because using it is mandatory, but doing it when it is not appropriate can be a reason for a sanction. These lights are installed in the rear of all vehicles as they are mandatory, while the front lights are already included in a large proportion of cars. Both work independently. According to traffic regulations, the front fog lights must be used in light fog. However, the rear fog lights are reserved for specific occasions and should only be turned on when the fog is very intense.

As indicated by the General Traffic Regulations “it is mandatory to use the lighting established by the regulations when there are weather or environmental conditions that significantly reduce visibility, such as fog, heavy rain, snowfall, clouds of smoke or dust or other similar conditions “. Failure to comply with this rule is considered a serious offense and the associated fine is 200 euros. So if you turn on the lights when this is not correct, you can get a sanction from the DGT.

These fog lights can also be used when it is raining or snowing heavily, but not when there is a risk of dazzling, i.e. when there is light precipitation. And it is that the temporary loss of vision due to glare can be a very dangerous situation. In the DGT they explain what you should do to reduce the impact on your driving. You must “turn your eyes to the right and down and be guided by the horizontal signage”. They also advise “try to focus your sight on the less lit part of the road and at the same time reduce your speed”
