Opel celebrates the anniversary of the Corsa with the limited edition “40 Years”

When the first Opel Corsa rolled off the production line in 1982, the first chapter was opened in a story that has survived to this day.

But to understand the popularity of the Corsa since its debut in 1982, you first have to look at another successful model with the Blitz, the Opel Kadett. A small car conceived and designed to offer more people mobility at a time when driving was still a real luxury. Later, and over the decades, customers quickly became more demanding as their purchasing power improved. The little Kadett got bigger and more powerful in the second half of the 20th century, approaching the compact segment in each of its new versions. This left a void in what was the usual model of entry to the Rüsselsheim range.

So it was time for a new small car, the Corsa. The new model first rolled off the production line at the newly built car plant in Zaragoza in the fall of 1982 and immediately set the stage for becoming a bestseller for Opel.

Today, 40 years and six generations later, more than 14 million units have left the factories, while demand for this best-selling commercial vehicle is greater than ever, especially for the 100% electric Corsa-e. Opel is celebrating this anniversary with the “Corsa 40 Years” special series, which will be on sale in selected markets in Europe in the coming weeks.

This limited edition, of which Opel will only produce 1,982 units, will have a new body color called “Rekord Red”, which recalls the red used in the original Corsa A. The contrast color, in black, is incorporated in the roof and in various applications, such as the lightning bolt logo -the Opel Blitz-, the control panel of the tailgate and the “Corsa” identification in the middle. The gloss black 17-inch light-alloy wheels with matt gray inserts underline its dynamic appearance.

Inside, the “Corsa 40 Years” draws not only from nostalgia, but also from modernity. The cabin, as in the first generation, exudes an unconventional style, especially due to the modern interpretation of the original Scottish plaid seats. Their future owners can also show off the same timeless design, at no extra cost, with two pairs of limited edition checkered socks in both the current and original designs.

The limited edition nameplate is also unique. Each “Corsa 40 Years” has its own registration plate, numbered 0001 to 1982, on the black molding of the dashboard on the front passenger side. In addition, as with all Corsas, this special series offers a lot of comfort and safety equipment as standard. The list ranges from Multimedia Radio audio equipment (compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) and LED headlights to electronic driver assistance systems, such as Forward Collision Alert with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection.
