Appeal rejected – operating license for Mochovce 3 NPP confirmed

Date:

The head of the Slovak Nuclear Regulatory Authority (UJD), Marta Ziakova, on Thursday confirmed the operating license for the completed third unit of the Mochovce nuclear power plant in western Slovakia. The decision is final, the organization said.

Ziakova rejected the appeal of the Austrian environmental organization Global 2000 against the decision of May 2021.

Global 2000 labeled the operating license for the nuclear reactor, which has been under construction since 1985 and is located about 100 kilometers from the Austrian border, as “irresponsible”.

Gewessler: ‘NPP must not become a threat to Austria’
Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) then had the decision of the Slovak nuclear authority checked.

The third reactor block had “already made headlines in the past due to major construction flaws,” Gewessler emphasized in May 2021, adding: “The Mochovce nuclear power plant must not pose a threat to Austria.”

She will contact her counterpart in Slovakia and consistently explain Austria’s position. Their efforts were in vain, as has been known since Thursday.
