At least 19 people have been killed in clashes with police after an albino child was kidnapped in Madagascar. 21 other people were injured, police said Tuesday. The violence escalated when a mob stormed a police station in the southeastern city of Ikongo in an attempt to take the law into their own hands.
The protesters had demanded the release of four people arrested on suspicion of kidnapping an albino child and murdering his mother. Police opened fire to fend off the crowd. After security forces arrived to reinforce, the situation calmed down.
Humans have magical powers
Police say the albino child has not yet been found. The motive for the alleged kidnapping is also unknown. In some African countries, albinos are abducted for ritualistic reasons because their light bodies are said to have magical powers.
