There are currently about 250 vacancies, mostly part-time jobs. “But the staff is now recruited and assigned on a daily basis, which means that the number is constantly decreasing,” says Herwig Kerschbaumer, Head of the Education Controlling/Communication Department of the Upper Austrian Education Directorate.

For the time being, there will be a total of 11,800 permanent jobs in the compulsory schools of Upper Austria in the 2022/23 school year. “We have the greatest need for staff in primary and secondary schools,” says Kerschbaumer, who also points out that not much has changed in the subject areas with special staffing requirements in recent years.
True to the motto “What Hans does not learn, Hans does not want to teach”. Subjects covered include German, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, as well as Exercise and Sports. Little consolation: this staff shortage is visible in all six regions of education. In some cases, especially in primary schools, a few more classroom teachers are needed.

“In the end, this is just a mid-term review, I want to emphasize that,” says Kerschbaumer: “We are currently in the middle of the recruitment phase.” The translation from the official German: Because there are not enough teachers, the existing educators should work more, ie overtime. When the so-called supplier reserve of 20 hours per year is used up, the extra effort is worth it.
