A radiant woman approaches me as I enter the Damaris house in Vienna-Heiligenstadt. Flashback: Shortly after the Russians invaded Ukraine, Lyudmilla (50) and her daughter Ana (30) arrived on the last trains from Kiev. At the end of February, scarred by the hardships, they told us about their adventurous escape to Austria. Completely lost, shivering with hunger and cold, the two had wandered around Vienna’s main train station. Security was notified and brought them to Caritas employees.
