The list of high-ranking Russian energy managers or businessmen who have died in circumstances that remain unexplained or mysterious since the invasion of Ukraine continues to grow. As has become known by now, Vladimir Putin’s representative for the development of Russia’s vast Arctic resources, Ivan Peshorin, fell into the sea on Saturday and drowned during a nighttime boat trip under circumstances that have not yet been fully clarified.

The 39-year-old CEO of the Far East and Arctic Development Corporation (ERDC) took a boat trip in the Sea of ​​Japan with a group of friends on Saturday evening, Pravda Online said. According to an eyewitness, the passengers already got on board.

Exact circumstances of death unclear
About 40 minutes into the journey, the boat’s captain was informed that a man had fallen overboard. It turned out that Peshorin probably fell from the forecastle deck, which is not visible from the bridge. It is believed that the 39-year-old top executive fell into the sea when the boat swung.

The captain turned the boat around to find him in the sea in the dark. Rescuers later joined the search, but Peschorin’s body was not found until two days later. On the coast of Cape Staritsky on Russky Island in the Sea of ​​Japan where she washed ashore. “Ivan’s death is an irreparable loss to friends and colleagues, a great loss to the company,” said a statement on the ERDC website.

A few days earlier, Pechorin, who according to Pravda Online would also have been responsible for the modernization of the aviation industry in Eastern Russia, attended the three-day Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostik, where Putin also performed. Strikingly, it wasn’t until February that Igor Nosov, Peschorin’s predecessor as CEO of the Far East and Arctic Development Corporation, died at just 43 years old — reportedly of a stroke.

Several managers have died since the start of the war
The chairman of Russia’s second-largest oil producer, Lukoil, Ravil Maganov, died in early September after falling from a hospital window. Death is considered mysterious. A few months earlier, another top manager of Lukoil had also died under mysterious circumstances.

In July, a businessman was found dead near St. Petersburg with links to the Russian natural gas company Gazprom. The oligarch Yuri Voronov floated motionless in the pool of his country house. He had a gunshot wound to the head and a gun and grenades were found near the body, according to Russia’s MK website.
