Police officer also injured – Grazer attacked by Lazio fans with a knife

The duel between Sturm Graz and Lazio Rome was not entirely peaceful off the field. After the two teams met, a 25-year-old from Graz was attacked by a group of Italian fans and injured with a knife. A police officer was also injured during the match.

On the sporting side, the game between Sturm Graz and Lazio Rome was a success – with a 0-0 draw, the Grazers were able to secure a point. But off the pitch, the police were called in, multiple reports came in and two people were injured.

Grazer attacked with a jackknife
On the pitch, the duel was already over, but for a 25-year-old Grazer, the encounter with a group of fans from Italy ended fatally: around 10:30 p.m., a police patrol found him lying on an embankment in the Karl-Huber-Gasse area. He had a bleeding wound about two inches long on his left forearm.

The man stated that he had recently been attacked by a group of Italian fans. He was punched twice in the face and an unknown assailant injured his forearm with a knife. The 25-year-old was taken to the LKH Graz by the rescue service. A search for the perpetrators was negative.

Incidents at fan march
Even at the pre-match fan march, a few people were noticed with their right arm outstretched. Video and photographic material of these events has been secured, is now being evaluated and submitted for legal assessment to the public prosecutor’s office in Graz.

Police officer suffered cuts
Towards the end of the game, a police officer was hit on the head by an unknown object and suffered a cut. Whether the object was deliberately thrown at the police officer is still under investigation.
