After a high-profile evening event in Washington, corona cases spread among prominent politicians in the American capital. After the traditional dinner of the Gridiron Club, a prestigious journalists association, several cabinet members, congressmen and government employees tested positive for the corona virus on the first weekend in April.
Several US media outlets, including the Washington Post, reported Sunday, citing organizers, that at least 67 of the approximately 630 guests had been infected with the virus since the celebratory dinner a week ago.
Various American ministers positive
Some of them had made their positive test results public in recent days — including Attorney General Merrick Garland, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, several members of Congress and Vice President Kamala Harris’s communications director.
The Gridiron Club is a relatively small association of journalists, composed primarily of Washington bureau chiefs from various media outlets. Membership is by invitation only. High-ranking guests from government and parliament are invited to the annual dinner.
Biden was not present at the event
US President Joe Biden was not present at the event, but the 79-year-old appeared to have come very close to the virus elsewhere. The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, announced on Thursday that a corona test had been positive for her. The day before, the mask-less 82-year-old had stood right next to Biden as a bill was signed at the White House.
Following Pelosi’s announcement, the government center said several routine Covid tests had been negative for the president since then. In recent days, however, Biden’s communications team emphasized that it is quite possible that despite all precautions, a corona test will at some point also turn out to be positive for the president. However, Biden is well protected with two doses of vaccine and two booster shots.
