Thousands to Belarus – “Goals reached”: Moscow ends partial mobilization

Date:

According to the authorities, the Russian capital Moscow has achieved the objectives of the partial mobilization ordered by President Vladimir Putin and ended conscription with immediate effect. It has not been disclosed how many men had been drafted into the army in Moscow since the Kremlin chief ordered them to do so.

Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Moscow had fulfilled its mobilization task. The conscription reports, which now come in at the home or work location, no longer need to be followed. The Moscow administrative region around the capital also reported the end of mobilization measures. According to Russian authorities, Moscow’s military commissar Maxim Loktjew said that volunteers can of course continue to volunteer.

Many newcomers already dead or in captivity
Many conscripts have reportedly been sent directly to Ukraine to fight with no training and insufficient equipment. Moments later, local media in Russia reported that reservists had been killed or imprisoned there.

To compensate for high Russian losses in the war against Ukraine, Putin ordered the mobilization of 300,000 reservists. Even though it was officially only a partial mobilization, almost every Russian family had to take into account that their husbands were called up. Hundreds of thousands of men fled to neighboring countries such as Finland, Georgia and Kazakhstan. In addition, many conscripts had to be sent back because of ill health.

Even Putin spoke of mistakes
The mobilization, which was rejected by large segments of the population, sparked the largest anti-war protests in months. There were also arson attacks on conscription offices. Even Putin had to admit mistakes in the pursuit. As an example, he cited calls for military service that had been made to fathers with many children, people with chronic illnesses or people who had passed military service age. There are many questions, mistakes should not be allowed, Putin said. Anyone sent to the front by mistake must go home. The Kremlin chief appealed to the prosecutor general’s office to prosecute the violators of the mobilization.

Joint unit on the Belarusian border
The joint military unity of Russia and Belarus is now slowly taking shape. According to the Belarusian Ministry of Defense, Russia is sending up to 9,000 soldiers and hundreds of technology units to Belarus. About 170 tanks, 200 armored fighting vehicles and artillery were expected, Valeri Revenko, head of the international military cooperation department of the Belarusian defense ministry, announced in Minsk on Monday.

The group is capable of defending itself against an attack from the west, National Security Council secretary Alexander Wolfovich said. The Belarusian border guard had previously informed about stronger security of the state borders. At the same time, Wolfovich emphasized that Belarus was not preparing for war. This mainly concerns joint maneuvers in response to military exercises in neighboring NATO countries. Belarus borders both Russia and Ukraine.
