Since the launch of the climate map on October 26, 2021, the single ticket for all public transport has been sold more than 200,000 times. According to the Ministry of the Environment, this far exceeded original expectations. The sales statistics of the transport companies were based on approximately 110,000 tickets for Austria.
The success of the offer shows that people in Austria want to travel climate-friendly, emphasized the responsible minister, Leonore Gewessler (Greens) in the “Salzburger Nachrichten”. “And they are willing to switch to public transport if it is easy, convenient and cheap.” Every euro spent on public transport pays off two or three times over, as it saves energy and money and protects the climate.
Most climate tickets for Austria were sold in Vienna (63,000) and Lower Austria (51,000). In Salzburg there were 11,000. Half of the 200,000 are classic climate tickets, the other half are youth, senior, special, army or civil servant tickets.
VCÖ calls for expansion
The Verkehrsclub Österreich (VCÖ) called for the next step to develop the climate ticket into an extensive mobility card. “Anyone who wishes to do so should be able to supplement the annual public transport card with car sharing and other sharing offers, such as rental bicycles, transport bicycles or e-scooters,” it sounds in a broadcast.
